Kenya Police FC head coach Etienne Ndayiragije has been named the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Coach of the Month for June, following his remarkable achievement of leading the law enforcers to their first-ever FKF Premier League title.

Ndayiragije, who joined Kenya Police in November 2024, has overseen an incredible transformation, steering the club from relegation threats earlier in the season to league champions in less than a year. His tactical brilliance and leadership have earned him unanimous recognition from the sports media fraternity.

He becomes the second foreign coach to win the award this year, following South African Carlos Katywa, who was feted in April after winning the Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup with Kabras Sugar RFC.

The Burundian tactician sealed the league title with a narrow 1-0 win over Shabana FC on June 15. Kenya Police capped their historic campaign with a 1-1 draw against Gor Mahia on June 22 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, receiving an unprecedented guard of honor from the record 21-time champions.

For his outstanding performance, Ndayiragije was awarded KSh 100,000 cash prize and a trophy courtesy of SJAK.

Reflecting on the successful season, the coach credited the team’s mindset and discipline.

“We focused on getting three points going into each game. Every match was like a final,” he said.

Looking ahead, Ndayiragije highlighted the importance of maintaining fitness during the off-season, urging his players to stay sharp ahead of the new campaign.

“I talked to them before they went home. They rest for one week, and in the second week, they are to begin personal training at home because we want them to stay fit. If you lose that fitness completely, regaining it is tough. I’m glad that some of them are maintaining their fitness, and when they return, we’ll know how to start over again,” the coach stated.

Meanwhile, Kenya Pipeline’s Geoffrey Omondi and GSU’s Gideon Tarus finished joint second in the voting after guiding their volleyball sides to national glory.

GSU triumphed in the men’s league, defeating Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in straight sets in Game Three, while KPC reclaimed the women’s title, overcoming DCI 2-0 in the best-of-three but tense finals.
