Three-storey building collapses in Kirinyaga

Debris of building that collapsed on Tuesday.

Residents of Piai and the surrounding areas of Mwea-east in Kirinyaga County woke up to find a three storey building collapsed.

According to the residents of Piai, led by Michael Chomba, the owner of the collapsed building had stopped construction for two months.

“We were shocked to find a three storey building that had stalled for two months on the ground and what we want to know is whether there was somebody inside the collapsed building like a watchman as the main gate locked and the compound is surrounded by iron sheet,” Chomba said.

Ken Mugo, the chairman of boda boda at Piai said he passed there on Monday on his way to Murinduko and the building was standing tall only to find it down later on.

“I still cannot believe the building has collapsed, at first I thought it was an earthquake,” Mugo said.

Residents living near the collapsed building said it came down shortly after 1am.

“It was raining when I heard a bang and thought it was a thunderstorm only to find a collapsed building today morning,” Mary Muthoni said.

Citizen Digital visited the scene on Tuesday morning, where officers from the county government or National Construction Authority (NCA) had not arrived at the scene.

The main gate remained locked from inside.
