Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was on Sunday given a 17-gun salute as he was laid to rest at their family home in Bondo, Siaya County.

Odinga’s remains were lowered into the grave a few minutes to 5 p.m. in a private ceremony only attended by members of his family, top government dignitaries, and tens of the guests from the burial ceremony earlier in the day.

He was buried next to his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and his mother, Mary Ajuma's graves at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

Military officials handed over a Kenyan flag to Odinga’s widow, Ida, in honour of her late husband’s service to the country.

Ida and other members of the Odinga family, President William Ruto, former president Uhuru Kenyatta, Chief of Defence Forces Charles Kahariri, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, and his Senate counterpart Amason Kingi are among those who laid wreaths by the former Prime Minister’s grave.

Odinga, 80, died after collapsing last Wednesday in India, where he was undergoing treatment. Sunday’s burial was per his wish that he be laid to rest within 72 hours of his death.

He was accorded a state burial with full honours.
