5-year-old dies, 13 hospitalised after consuming poisonous meat in Bungoma

The victims are said to have eaten beef from a cow that died on Tuesday. Shortly after the meal, they developed symptoms including stomach pains, headaches, diarrhoea, and vomiting.

Kimilili Sub-County Hospital Nursing Officer in Charge Grace Wanjala confirmed that 12 patients remain admitted, while one has since been treated and discharged. She said the patients are responding well to treatment and their condition is improving.

"We received information that the victims ate beef, and our officer who visited the scene reported that five of them needed to be admitted, while seven others joined later. Two adults and seven children," said Wanjala.

"So far, they are receiving medication and are out of danger. We had information that one had already succumbed by the time our officer arrived," she added.

Health officials in Kimilili Sub-County have since cautioned residents against consuming meat that has not been inspected and approved by public health officers, warning of serious health risks.
