AK salutes World Cross Country heroes as NOC-K gears up for LA 2028

Athletics Kenya (AK) has lauded Team Kenya for their inspiring performances and exemplary
representation of the country at the recently concluded 46th World Athletics
Cross Country Championships, while reaffirming its commitment to investing more
resources in youth development ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The triumphant Kenyan
team is set to return home between Tuesday and Wednesday after a stellar outing
at the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships held in Tallahassee,
Florida, on Saturday.
Kenya once again
underlined its dominance on the global stage by topping the medal table for the
third consecutive edition, collecting an impressive total of nine medals—three
gold, four silver, and two bronze.
The athletes will arrive
in three groups, with the first contingent scheduled to land at 9:10 p.m.
today. Among those in the initial group are medallists Agnes Jebet Ngetich,
Frankline Kibet, and Andrew Kiptoo Alamisi.
The second group,
arriving tomorrow at 6:10 a.m., includes Maurine Chebor, Ishmael Rokitto, and
Denis Kipkoech Kemboi, while the final batch, expected at 7:10 a.m., features
Daniel Ebenyo Simiu, Emmanuel Kiprono, and Reynold Cheruiyot, among others.
Meanwhile, the National
Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has turned its focus to early preparations
for Team Kenya ahead of the fourth Youth Olympic Games, set to be held in
Dakar, Senegal, later this year.
National Olympic
Committee of Kenya (NOCK) first vice president and Athletics Kenya (AK) Youth
Development Director Barnaba Korir said the strategy will prioritize consistent
talent identification and development across learning institutions.
“We are targeting schools
from primary to secondary to universities to centralize training every term and
during holidays, because inconsistency would be a cause for concern,” Korir
said.
The Dakar Youth Olympic
Games will be the first multi-sport Olympic event to be staged in Africa,
running from October 31 to November 13, 2026.
