Athletics Kenya cancels World Indoor Championships trials

Athletics Kenya
(AK) has cancelled the national trials for the World Athletics Indoor
Championships that were scheduled for January 30–31 in Nairobi.
In a statement
released on Monday, the federation cited unavoidable circumstances for the
decision.
“Athletics Kenya
wishes to inform all athletes, officials and stakeholders that the World
Athletics Indoor Trials that were scheduled to take place on January 30–31,
2026 in Nairobi have been cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances,” the
statement read.
AK confirmed
that the team to the championships will now be selected through a time-based
and merit-based process once the World Athletics qualification window closes on
March 8.
“Athletics Kenya
will proceed with the selection of athletes who will represent the country at
the World Athletics Indoor Championships through a time-based and merit-based
selection process,” AK added.
The selection
will cover the men’s 60m, women’s 60m hurdles, and the 400m, 800m, 1500m and
3000m for both men and women.
The World
Athletics Indoor Championships will be held from March 20–22 in
Kuyavian–Pomeranian, Poland.
At the last
edition in Nanjing, China, Kenya failed to win a medal, with Susan Ejore
finishing fifth in the women’s 1500m, while Cornelius Kemboi and Purity Gitonga
placed eighth in the 3,000m a difficult outing for coach Janeth Jepkosgei’s
squad.
