Muli made the remarks during the burial of Stephen Kamunya, the father of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, held at Nga’arua Farm in Laikipia County.
Addressing mourners, he announced that the National Liberal Party (NLP) intends to form a political coalition with Njenga as part of efforts to consolidate the region’s political strength.
“This occasion reminds us of the need for peace and togetherness. Mt. Kenya cannot afford fragmentation. Our strength lies in unity, and together with Maina Njenga, we will ensure the region speaks with one voice,” Muli said, drawing applause from those in attendance.
Muli claimed that the NLP has a membership of about 500,000 people and enjoys additional clan support estimated at nearly 400,000 members. On the strength of this support, he argued that he deserves representation at any negotiation table aimed at safeguarding the interests of his community.
The burial, which was attended by thousands of mourners, quickly evolved into a political platform, highlighting underlying tensions over leadership and influence in the Mt. Kenya region.
Maina Njenga warned that ongoing supremacy battles and the exchange of insults among political leaders could destabilize the country, cautioning that reckless rhetoric could plunge the nation into chaos. He urged leaders to “tame their tongues” in the interest of peace and unity.
Prominent lawyer Ndegwa Njiru also weighed in, criticizing Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s push for a referendum. Njiru claimed the proposal was a calculated move intended to disrupt the 2027 elections due to fears of a united opposition.
Njenga’s Growing Support
Calls for unity behind Njenga grew during the event, with James Wanjohi urging Mt. Kenya leaders to rally behind him, insisting that Njenga has already been widely acknowledged as the region’s leader.
His remarks were echoed by MP Elijah Kururia, who declared Njenga the sole political spokesperson for Mt. Kenya, citing his expanding support base beyond Laikipia County.
