Bandari fire head coach Casa Mbungo

Mombasa based Kenyan Premier League side Bandari FC has parted company with Rwandan coach Casa Mbungo after barely 13 months in charge, Citizen Digital has learnt.

The development comes in the wake of poor results for the Coast-based side.

The parting of ways, Citizen Digital understands is on ‘mutual consent’.

Mbungo joined the team in January 2021 as a replacement for Ken Odhiambo who decamped to Sofapaka.

It remains unclear who will take charge of the team as the club has remained tight-lipped on the matter but Mbungo’s assistant Anthony Kimani is likely to take over on an interim basis.

During the 2021/22 season, he led the team to a third-place finish in the league and was named second runner-up in the coach of the year category during the end of the season gala.

Mbungo’s major assignment in 2021/22 season was to challenge for the league title, which saw the dockers beef up their squad ahead of the new season with the acquisition of the likes of Andrew Juma, Chris Ochieng, Faraj Ominde, and Boniface Mwangemi but the results did not turn out as planned

The club is likely to fork out a staggering Sh4 Million in payment of the remainder of his contract.

They have only managed to win six matches in 18 rounds played so far in the country’s top tier, and in the last 13 games they have managed just two wins piling up the pressure on the soft-spoken tactician who blamed numerous injuries in his squad for the poor run.

He leaves Bandari in the ninth place on the log with 26 points, his last assignment being the barren draw against KCB

 “It is true the coach has been fired. He had been given a number of games to turn things around but unfortunately the bad run persisted and the management was forced to cut ties with him. His assistant Anthony Kimani will take charge of the team until an appointment is made,” a source from the Dockers camp told Citizen Digital.

Mbungo has previously handled AFC Leopards in the FKF Premier League and is best remembered for reporting the club to FIFA after they failed to pay his dues.

The club was forced to pay him over Ksh. 4 million for breach of contract.

His assistant Anthony Kimani will take charge of the team until an appointment is made.

The dockers host FKF-PL defending Gor Mahia in their next league assignment.
