Baseball Federation President (BFP) Titus Mutwiri has
revealed that the sport will be included in the Senior Secondary School
curriculum as an examinable subject in Grade 11.
Speaking in Kisii County on Friday during a Baseball Five
technical training workshop for teachers of physical education, Mutwiri said the
aim was to prepare the teachers in readiness for training the skills and
competencies needed in the sport of Baseball Five.
Mutwiri said the training conducted in Kisii is a pilot
before the sport can spread to other parts of the country.
"This is the first training of its kind in this region, though there are other regions where
baseball is doing well," Mutwiri said.
He added that the Baseball national team is doing well globally, and it is currently ranked
in position nine.
Baseball Federation, Kisii County Chairperson Kerubo
Momanyi, said this was the first pilot to solely involve teachers of physical education in the whole county.
She said there was a deliberate decision to equip teachers
of physical education with the necessary skills since they are the ones who
will teach the sport in senior secondary.
"Teachers are the ones who have the reach and access to
the children, and the best way to develop the sport is from the young
developmental stage, the children," Momanyi said.
Rodah Bosco, a teacher of physical education at Tambacha PAG
Secondary, thanked the federation for making Kisii County the pilot
county, adding that the training will greatly help the teachers with the skills
needed in teaching students.
"We are grateful to the Federation for choosing Kisii
as a pilot county. The skills we have gained will help move baseball to the
next level," Bosco said.
The training brought together 50 teachers of physical
education drawn from various schools in Kisii County.
