A 12-year-old boy has been hospitalized with severe burns as eight rental houses burnt to ashes after a battery exploded in a rental house at God Jope Trading Center, Lambwe West, Homa Bay County.

The boy was rushed to Ogongo Health Center after he sustained severe burns on the left hand when he was trying to disconnect power from the battery.

Acting Chief of Lambwe West Location Fredrick Onyango Odero says the battery which was being powered by a solar panel exploded and caused the inferno when the boy was disconnecting power.

The administrator says the boy was rescued by their neighbors after the explosion and was rushed to the hospital. However, their house alongside other eight Mabati structures were completely destroyed.

Onyango says all household items in the affected rental houses were burnt to ashes during the fire incident.

At least ten families were affected in the inferno and were forced to spend a night in the cold after all their belongings were damaged.
