Battle for Kitui Central MP seat intensifies as calls mount for NLP leader Muli to vie

The seat is now wide open after incumbent MP Makali Mulu announced plans to seek the Kitui governorship, ending a long period of political dominance in the constituency and creating an opportunity for new contenders.

For years, aspirants in Kitui Central defined their campaigns by opposing Makali. With his departure, attention has shifted to who can consolidate local support while also wielding influence at the national level.

Muli has a strong following, particularly within the Anzauni community, and has been active in grassroots initiatives through the Kyalo Kya Maendeleo Foundation, supporting education, water projects, and youth programmes across the constituency.

“We have seen Dr. Muli even outside election periods. He has supported schools and young people here, which is why many believe he should represent us in Parliament,” said Jane Mwanzia, a teacher in Kitui town.

Supporters argue that his role as NLP leader could give Kitui Central a stronger voice in national politics.

“Makali gave Kitui Central visibility, but Muli could give it influence. As a national political figure, he would be better placed to advance our interests in Parliament,” said businessman Peter Mutua.

However, Muli faces a strategic dilemma. As NLP leader, he is expected to focus on building alliances and positioning the party as part of a potential third force ahead of 2027. Running for the constituency seat could limit his flexibility at the national level.

Some local leaders warn that ignoring the calls to contest could weaken his political base at home.

“Kitui Central has always been his foundation. If he ignores the people calling on him to run, he risks losing touch with the constituency that has supported him for years,” said Mary Ndunge, a youth leader in Mulango.
