Women in Kenya are increasingly challenging long-held beliefs that certain careers are “only for men,” thanks to initiatives aimed at empowering female entrepreneurs in traditionally male-dominated industries.

The second phase of the Biashara Pawa initiative, launched in Nakuru County under the IYBA-SEED programme, seeks to create more opportunities for women in sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, technology, agriculture, and the blue economy.

The programme is funded by the European Union and partner governments including France, Germany, and Slovakia, and implemented by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation in collaboration with local grassroots organizations.

At the launch event, over 200 women and youth gathered to discuss challenges and opportunities in venturing into industries historically dominated by men. Participants cited societal stereotypes as a major barrier, noting that professions like engineering or driving are often perceived as male-only careers, while nursing or teaching are labeled as women’s work.

“For a long time, society has made us believe that professions like Uber drivers are for men, and nursing is for ladies,” said Coach Blessed Abby, founder of Abby’s Holistic Wellness Hub. “These stereotypes discourage women and youth from exploring opportunities in fields where they could thrive.”

The initiative focuses on inclusion, mentorship, and visibility, spotlighting role models and sharing success stories to inspire women to break barriers. George Wayne, CEO of Nakuru Box, emphasized the importance of working closely with local business associations to create meaningful change.

“Biashara Pawa aims to amplify women’s voices and show that they can succeed in any sector,” Wayne said. “Through sector-based dialogue events and community storytelling, we want to motivate more women and youth to engage in entrepreneurship confidently.”

The programme also partners with organizations such as Wisehub in Kisumu and EldoHub in Uasin Gishu, leveraging grassroots networks to support women entrepreneurs at the community level.

Nduta Ndirangu of SNV Kenya highlighted the broader goal of the initiative: “Empowerment begins with changing mindsets. We are here to inspire women and youth to see themselves as capable of succeeding in sectors traditionally viewed as male domains.”

By challenging stereotypes and providing practical guidance, Biashara Pawa hopes to expand women’s participation in high-growth industries and foster inclusive economic development across Kenya.
