As Kenya grapples with a growing burden of lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs), insurance providers are increasingly stepping beyond traditional risk coverage to support preventive health awareness at the community level.

This weekend, Bima Life Insurance Agency led a community-based health awareness and screening initiative during a church-led event, as part of its broader effort to link preventive healthcare with financial protection. The initiative was delivered in partnership with Clemency Medicare, a digital wellness provider.

The initiative brought digital preventive health tools directly to community members, enabling participants to assess lifestyle-related risk factors associated with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and obesity. These diseases now account for a growing share of hospital visits and long-term healthcare costs in Kenya.

At the centre of the screening exercise was Clemency Medicare’s Health Status screening platform, a digital self-assessment tool made accessible to the public through Bima Life’s online platform, MyBimaLife (www.mybimalife.com).

The tool uses ten lifestyle and health-related questions, including diet, physical activity, sleep patterns, weight, and underlying health conditions, to generate an individualised health risk profile focused on early awareness rather than clinical diagnosis.

“Many Kenyans only discover non-communicable diseases after complications have already developed,” said Maxwell Omondi of Clemency Medicare. “Our aim is to encourage early awareness and preventive action by giving people simple tools to understand their health status.”

Bima Life said the integration of wellness tools on its platform reflects a deliberate strategy to position insurance as part of a broader prevention and preparedness journey.

“When health risks are understood early at the community level, families are able to make better decisions and avoid devastating financial shocks,” said Joseph Nyoike, CEO of Bima Life Insurance Agency. “This is why we are supporting preventive health initiatives that reach people where they live and worship.”

Healthcare stakeholders note that community-based screening initiatives, when paired with accessible digital platforms, play an important role in supporting national efforts to reduce the impact of non-communicable diseases through early education and intervention.

The team from Bima Life plans to continue expanding access to preventive health and protection tools through its digital platform, working with wellness and healthcare partners to support more community-based initiatives across the country.
