The Kenya Roads Board (KRB) has identified the motorcycle sector, populary known as boda bodas as the new killer along the country’s major roads and towns.

According to the board, the number of accidents involving boda boda operators is worrying with hundreds  of people dying and thousands of others maimed annually.

“We have embarked on a major training programme targeting the operators in major towns in a bid to reduce the number of fatalities,” said the authority in a statement.

This was revealed in Naivasha during the board’s tour to the county sub-county hospital where they donated an ultra-modern ambulance and medical equipment.

Recently there has been an increase in the number of road accidents involving boda bodas with the most recent on killing one and leaving seven injured in Rongo, Migori County.

Migori County Commander Peter Kirui appealed to boda boda riders to adhere to traffic rules citing that most road accidents reported in Rongo are caused by reckless riders.

There about 700,000 boda boda operators countrywide, but the number is always increasing as new investors continue to join the market.
