Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja sparked excitement during this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations by making a heartfelt appeal to President William Ruto, proposing that the soon-to-be-unveiled Talanta Stadium be named Raila Odinga International Stadium in honour of Kenya’s iconic statesman.

Addressing thousands of Kenyans gathered at Nyayo Stadium, Sakaja called for next year’s national celebration to be hosted at the new Talanta Stadium. He passionately urged:

"We kindly request our beloved President that next year’s Jamhuri Day celebration be held at the new Talanta Stadium, and we ask that it be named Raila Odinga Stadium."

His remarks were met with wild applause, prompting Sakaja to repeat his appeal following cheers from the crowd.

The proposed renaming has been widely described as a long-overdue tribute to Raila Odinga’s enduring contributions to Kenya’s democratic journey.

Currently in its final phase of construction, Talanta Stadium is set to become Nairobi’s premier sporting venue. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to elevate Kenya’s presence on the international stage, with a seating capacity of 60,000.

The stadium is on track for completion by March 2026, following its groundbreaking ceremony officiated by President William Ruto in March 2024.
