Two Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) students on Friday lost their lives in an accident along the Kisumu-Nairobi highway.

The students were travelling to Awasi in Kisumu County to attend the burial of their colleague, Elvis ‘Beast’ Otieno, who was the students’ body chairman at the institution, and who died two weeks ago.

Amateur footage captured moments before the ill-fated accident on Friday shows some students dangerously seated on top of a moving bus, others hanging out of the windows, as the vehicle sped along the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway.

At around 12:30pm, the university bus collided head-on with a salon car, leaving two students dead on the spot.

Joel Awino, TUM Dean of Students, said: “We picked the body from Aga Khan Hospital on our way to Awasi, our buses had a head-on collision with a salon car, we lost two male students, it happened at 12:30.”

Thirty-two others are nursing injuries, with seventeen admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital and fifteen at Lisa Hospital in Ahero.

Brian Ochieng, a TUM student, said: “The vehicle dogged a small car and lost control and fell.”

Joseph Omolo, TUM President, added: “We had come to give Beast a decent send-off, we were together with the team, we were waiting for the convoy at Ngere.”

Meanwhile, in Awasi, the burial of the late student chairman went on as planned on Friday, drawing leaders including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who joined mourners in paying their last respects.

What was meant to be a solemn farewell has instead plunged the institution into another session of mourning, with families and students now grappling with more loss.
