Gor Mahia’s head
coach Charles Akonnor is now settled and working on reclaiming the league title,
club administrative secretary Ronald Ngala has said.
“The coach joined us when most of our players
were turning out for Harambee Stars hence he could not determine his first
eleven immediately. He is now okay after understanding his players and ready to
reclaim the title,’’ said Ngala.
His very first major assignment with Gor was
on September 10 against Tanzania’s Simba SC during the Simba Day celebrations
where the Tanzanian side floored Gor 2-0 away in Tanzania.
On their return
to the local scene, Gor suffered a 1-0 season opener defeat at the hands of
Bidco United before their full squad assembled again after the international
break.
“The coach is experienced…after his three
consecutive league wins… we are confident he will help the team redeem from
last season’s trophy less dismay.’’
The record
champions have so far won three times from four outings and sit third on the
log with 9 points, one behind leaders Kakamega Homeboyz but with a match in
hand. Over the weekend, Gor demolished Posta Rangers with a deserved 3-0 win to
hand the mailmen their first defeat of the term.
Meanwhile the
team’s lead striker Ghanaian Ebenezer Adukwaw is still under observation after
suffering a shoulder injury on October 10 during the ODM at 20 finals in
Mombasa just after scoring the solitary goal that handed Gor Mahia the trophy.
Ebenezer is one of coach Akonnor new signings,
and has hit the ground running. Lewis Bandi, another new signing, is also sidelined
with soft tissue injuries.
They next face Mathare United on October 30 in
their fifth outing in a mid-week fixture. The ‘Slum Boys ‘over the weekend
handed Shabana FC their second defeat of the season before their home crowD in
Kisii with a 1-0 scoreline.
“All my players were in good spirits (against Posta)
and we could do nothing other than a deserved win in honour of our late Patron
(Raila Odinga). We were all happy after the win and we are planning to do more
for our fans,” Coach Akonnor said.
