The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has refuted claims suggesting that it has imposed tax debts on embattled former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju amid his ongoing loan and property troubles.
The Authority, in a
statement released on Thursday, rubbished the reports terming
them as misinformation, as it reaffirmed that Tuju is a "compliant and valued
taxpayer."
“Kenya Revenue
Authority (KRA) has noted with concern recent media reports alleging that it
has imposed tax debts on Hon. Raphael Tuju,” read the statement.
“The Authority
wishes to clarify that Tuju is a compliant and valued taxpayer. The information
is therefore incorrect and misleading to the public.”
While reiterating
its commitment to collecting and accounting for revenue, the taxman said it
would ensure all taxpayers are treated with fairness and professionalism.
KRA consequently
urged the public and media to verify information with the Authority to avoid
the spread of inaccurate reports.
The former CS has been facing a standoff with authorities after a court decision cleared the way for the auction of his Karen property to recover a debt estimated at more than Ksh.1.9 billion in a case that has been in litigation for years.
Tuju has previously written to Chief Justice Martha Koome over the dispute after auctioneers, accompanied by security personnel and a group of
individuals, attempted to take control of his Dari Business Park in Karen, over the long-running debt
dispute with the East African Development Bank (EADB).
Milimani
Magistrate’s Court in Nairobi on Wednesday struck out an application seeking to obtain
search warrants against the former CS, citing
insufficient grounds to support the request.
In a ruling
delivered under case number MCCRMISC/E1359/2026, the court found that
investigators had failed to establish a basis for pursuing a search of Tuju’s
residence in connection with an alleged false report.
