Construction of the Karira Bridge in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, has begun, linking Rice Village and Ngurubani town.

The bridge is part of the ongoing Ngurubani–Nguka–Kagio road project and is expected to address long-standing challenges caused by frequent flooding of River Thiba, which has often disrupted transport in the area.

Once complete, the new structure will replace the current narrow bridge, which residents say has been unsafe, particularly during heavy rains. In the past, incidents of vehicles plunging into the river and difficulties in crossing have been reported.

Residents have expressed optimism about the project, noting that it could improve movement within the area and ease access to essential services such as healthcare and markets.

“We have been facing challenges during heavy rains, especially for patients and school-going children,” said Henry Ngondo, a boda boda operator in the area.

The project is expected to improve connectivity for residents in Nguka, Ndorome, Karira, Kiuria, Kangiciri and neighbouring areas.

Local residents have called for timely completion of the bridge to minimise further disruptions.
