The dam, expected to be completed within six months, will benefit over 20,000 households in Wang’chieng Ward and support sustainable agricultural production in the region.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Irrigation, Ephantus Kimotho, said the dam is currently 70 per cent complete. Kimotho, accompanied by Karachuonyo MP Adipo Okuome, noted that the infrastructure will cushion the community against the impacts of prolonged drought.
Kimotho pointed out that the project has the potential to irrigate over 100,000 acres of land, supporting multiple agricultural value chains, improving household incomes, and mitigating the effects of climate change in the region.
He added that harvesting rainwater during the long rains will ensure a steady water supply for use during dry seasons, promoting year-round agricultural productivity.
During the visit, Kimotho also expressed concern over the underutilization of the Oluch Kimira Irrigation Scheme, pledging that the ministry would ensure all 3,600 acres allocated for the project are fully exploited to boost rice production and strengthen national food security.
Karachuonyo MP Andrew Adipo Okuome described the Okundi project as a “game changer” for the area and urged residents to maximize the irrigation infrastructure for both subsistence and commercial farming.
Local residents welcomed the initiative, noting that the dam will improve access to clean water, reduce the distance traveled to fetch water, and create employment opportunities for the community.
