Police in Kirinyaga County have destroyed contraband Supermatch cigarettes valued at more than KSh100,000 following a court order authorising their disposal.

According to Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Luckyton Mudavadi, officers seized over 25,000 cigarettes packaged in 10 cartons on 3 September 2025, leading to the arrest of two suspects. Mudavadi said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb the sale of illicit goods in the region.

“The two suspects were arrested in Kabonge and Getuya villages. We will not slow down in the fight against contraband products,” he said on Wednesday.

The cigarettes were destroyed at the Baricho Health Centre, with Mudavadi noting that the destruction is meant to prevent uncustomed or counterfeit products from re-entering the market.

Judicial officials from the Baricho Law Courts, officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority, and representatives from the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) supervised the destruction exercise.
