The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL)
General Assembly has elected Kenya’s Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
Mohamed Amin to serve as Africa's Delegate on its Executive Committee.
In an official communication issued on Thurday, INTERPOL
revealed that the Committee's responsibility would be to oversee the
implementation of the General Assembly's decisions and ensure all policies
align with the organisation's priorities.
Aside from Amin, five other members were elected into the
committee; Lucas Philippe (President), Wang Yong (Vice President for
Asia), Issam Fetoui (Delegate for Africa), Kazumi Ogasawara (Delegate
for Asia) and Stefano Carvelli (Delegate for Europe).
The selection was made to balance the geographical
distribution across the world. With the addition of six members, the Committee
is now fully constituted with 13 members comprising the President, three
Vice-Presidents and nine Delegates.
The members will serve three-year terms, except for the
President, who will serve a four-year term.
INTERPOL pointed out that all members would retain their
full-time positions and responsibilities within their countries throughout
their mandate, contributing to the organization with their expertise.
In the face of increasingly complex transnational crime,
strengthening INTERPOL’s governance structures is more important than
ever," the institution’s Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza stated.
“I look forward to working with the new - and continuing -
members of the Executive Committee so that together we can listen and respond
to the needs of our member countries as they confront current and emerging
threats.”
