The death toll from Tuesday night’s road crash at Mukhonje in Lugari has risen to ten after two more victims succumbed to their injuries, authorities confirmed.

The latest fatalities were boda boda riders who reportedly collided while transporting bags of fertilizer from the initial crash site.

The accident occurred along the busy Eldoret–Webuye highway and involved a matatu and a truck loaded with fertilizer. Witnesses said the matatu, traveling from Eldoret, rammed into the rear of the stationary truck as its driver attempted to overtake other vehicles.

Maturu Sub-location Assistant Chief Samuel Wamalwa confirmed the incident, noting that the matatu driver was among those who died at the scene.

Passengers who survived described the terrifying moment of impact.

“We heard a loud bang when the vehicle hit the trailer. We had to climb out through the windows,” one survivor recounted.

Residents claimed the truck had stalled on the roadside for more than two days before the accident.

“This trailer has been here for about two days — the driver was even staying at my place,” said local resident John Sakwa. He added that the crash occurred at around 7:30 p.m., and that eight people were initially confirmed dead.
