The death toll in the Elgeyo Marakwet mudslide has climbed to 34 people after two more bodies were retrieved.

This comes even as search efforts continue with the government deploying sniffer dogs to help the search and recovery team.

Two more bodies have been retrieved as search efforts continue in Chesongoch, the Elgeyo Marakwet tragedy.

Efforts to get more bodies trapped in the mudslide are ongoing, with the government scaling up its search efforts by deploying sniffer dogs to help identify areas where the raging mudslides buried the victims.

“Mimi serikali munisaidie tu kusomesha kijana yangu ya KMTC kwa sababu yule wa university ameenda na bado hatujampata kwa matope,” said a parent of a missing boy.

The government is currently undertaking resettlement of affected families, providing food and non-food aid, and moving those in danger to safer grounds.

In the neighbouring Iten, where a similar tragedy occurred, the family that lost two family members is in mourning as they try to come to terms with the tragic loss.

A family member narrated their ordeal during the tragedy.

For now, the government has called on all those living around the mudslide-prone areas to move to safer grounds.
