The hard-earned win was significant on many fronts. It was Omollo’s first victory since taking charge on December 31, 2025, and it snapped a four-match winless run that had left the club hovering dangerously in the relegation zone. More importantly, it showcased the defensive solidity the coach has been tirelessly demanding from his players.
Speaking after the match, Omollo emphasized that discipline at the back was the foundation of the result. He noted that APS Bomet had been punished repeatedly this season for avoidable errors, but against Nairobi United, those mistakes were finally cut out.
“We’ve been making some mistakes, and today you could see there were no mistakes, especially in the defence line,” Omollo said. “I always tell my defence that if you don’t make mistakes, then we have a high chance of winning because every game we have been scoring.”
Despite the CAF Confederation Cup debutants sustaining pressure, particularly in the closing stages, APS Bomet stood firm. Omollo praised his players for their collective effort, highlighting how everyone dropped behind the ball to frustrate an opponent stacked with quality.
“Nairobi being Nairobi, with very good players, they were always in our box, but we defended well,” he added. “Everybody was behind the ball, and in another way we really frustrated them.”
The coach was also quick to point out that conceding did not come from a defensive lapse, something he described as a major psychological boost for both himself and the squad. He believes the confidence gained from defending resolutely will be crucial going forward.
“What makes me happy is not only the result, but that we didn’t make a mistake that led to a goal for the first time since I came here,” Omollo explained. “Any win gives you confidence, to the coach and to the players.”
Before the Nairobi United clash, APS Bomet had lost to Murang’a Seal and AFC Leopards, while drawing against Shabana FC and Mara Sugar. The Nyayo triumph lifted them to 14th place on 18 points, injecting renewed belief into their survival campaign.
Attention now turns to a daunting home fixture against league leaders Gor Mahia on February 8. APS Bomet stunned K’Ogalo 4–1 in the first leg earlier in the season, and Omollo knows the champions will come hard seeking revenge.
“I know they’re going to come on us tough because we won the first leg,” he said. “But I believe we are now equal to the task. We don’t want to let it go.”
With defensive confidence finally taking root, APS Bomet head into the next phase of the season believing that their fight has truly begun.
