Residents of Sigor and Siongiroi in Chepalungu, Bomet County, are raising an alarm over the deteriorating state of Kipsuter Bridge, a key crossing along the Sigor–Kipsuter–Siongiroi road.

Built in 1993, the bridge has served the region for decades, but has been in a worrying state since signs of damage first appeared three years ago.

The situation has now reached critical levels. The bridge has developed a gaping hole, with exposed steel reinforcements and crumbling edges — clear signs of structural failure.

Residents told Wananchi Reporting that despite their repeated reports, no inspection or repairs have been carried out.

“This bridge is our only way to reach essential services, and now it feels like we’re gambling with our lives every time we cross it,” said Miriam Chebet, a vegetable vendor from Siongiroi.

Vehicles, boda boda riders, schoolchildren, and traders still use the bridge daily, despite its failing condition.

Locals say each crossing now comes with the fear that it might be their last.

“We’ve reported this issue several times, but nothing has been done. It feels like they’re waiting for tragedy to strike before they take action,” said Samuel Kiprotich, a farmer from Sigor.

“We can’t keep waiting for something to happen. It’s too dangerous now. We’re asking the government to step in and save lives,” said Peter Lang’at, a boda boda operator.

The region has already begun experiencing heavy rainfall, making the situation worse.

Residents now fear the rains will accelerate erosion and further weaken the foundation of the bridge, increasing the risk of total collapse.
