Kapenguria’s Rosaline David led Kenya’s medal harvest in
the men's and women’s 10 Road Race on Sunday evening at the Slottsskogen City
Park in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Rosaline grabbed a gold medal in the women's W45
category, crossing the finish line with a championship record time of 35:08.
This was her second gold medal in the World Masters
Athletics Championships after her stellar show in the women’s 5000m at the
Ullevi Stadium last week.
Kenya’s Joan Chepchirchir Kigen clocked 35:54, finishing
second to bag silver in the same category.
Rosaline David, who is representing Kenya abroad for the
first time, expressed her joy following the sweet victory in front of a charged
crowd.
“I am very happy for this win. For sure, I did not
expect such a result. The race was tough because of the sharp hills, but I
talked to my teammate Joan, and she told me to maintain the pace in the lead.
That is the reason I pressed hard to trouble the
opponent that was closing in. I would like to request my West Pokot governor,
honorable Simon Kachapin, to come and receive me at the airport just as he had
promised. I have not let him and Kenyans down; I have won two gold medals,”
Rosaline said after the race.
Kenneth Mburu Mung’ara capped a glorious golden day for
Kenya after claiming victory in the Men’s’ M50 10KM Road Race at City Park.
Mburu, who trains in Limuru, Kiambu County, also timed a
championship record of 30:22, accelerating Team Kenya’s celebrations on a
chilly Sunday evening.
Francis Bowen, who had won a gold medal in men’s 5000M,
settled for the silver medal in a time of 31:27, while Frenchman Fredrick
Gilbert finished third to complete the podium finish.
Samuel Ndereba finished second (3:17) in the men’s M45,
winning another silver medal for Kenya, which closed the day with five medals
from the 10 Road Race.
The remarkable results catapulted Kenya to the medal
standings after amassing 18 medals, which included four golds, nine silvers,
and four bronze medals.
