At least eight people were killed and seven others critically injured following a fatal road traffic accident involving a bus and a matatu along Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Katumani.

The Friday night crash prompted a swift response from emergency teams drawn from Muumandu and Kyumbi, who were dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue and evacuation operations.

Authorities confirmed that six passengers died on the spot due to the impact of the collision. Two others succumbed to their injuries later on Saturday while receiving treatment.

Seven other victims sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where they are currently receiving specialised medical care.

Rescue operations at the scene have since been completed, with police and other relevant agencies now focusing on traffic management and investigations to establish the cause of the accident.

Traffic flow along the busy highway was temporarily disrupted as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Authorities extended their condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the crash and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
