Emotions ran high at Kenyatta University (KU) grounds on Friday evening as students mourned 11 departed colleagues who perished in a tragic road accident on Monday.

In a solemn candle-light vigil, students, faculty, and staff of Kenyatta University, united in mourning, remembered the lives of the students who died in the tragic road accident at Maungu area near Voi town.

With their hearts heavy with sorrow, the Kenyatta University students illuminated the night with candles as they held the portraits of their departed colleagues.

United in grief, they reflected on the tragic event that forced the university to halt its academic activities for three days.

Despite the circumstances, the students led by Kenyatta University Students Association (KUSA) President Sarova Bonaya shared a message of hope and resilience, believing in their collective strength to navigate through this difficult period.

"I believe the support of you and the leadership will help us heal," said Bonaya.

His sentiments were echoed by the University Executive Dean School of Pure and Applied Sciences Prof. Michael Gicharu, who shared how the incident left the university in a state of shock.

"News of the accident came as a shock to us. It was very difficult to take it all in," said Gicharu.

Earlier on Friday, the students congregated to pay their last respects to the departed souls.

The 11 were part of 58 other students who were on their way to Mombasa on an academic excursion when their school bus collided with a truck.

Eighteen other students who survived are recuperating at a Nairobi hospital, with two of them in critical condition.

The Kenyatta University fraternity will on Sunday hold a memorial service for the 11 students.
