Faith Kipyegon, compatriots eye clean sweep in 1,500m final

Triple world champion Faith Kipyegon believes Kenya has what it takes to claim a podium sweep when the 1,500m final that takes place this afternoon at 4.05pm.
Speaking after
qualifying for the race, Kipyegon said the strong Kenyan contingent of Nelly
Chepchirchir and Dorcas Ewoi is well-prepared to execute the tactics needed for
a 1-2-3 finish.
“We have a
strong line-up and I believe if all goes well we can win all three medals. It’s
all about discipline, teamwork, and good tactics—and we will make Kenyans
proud,” said Kipyegon.
The Olympic
champion has already made history as the first female athlete to win three
Olympic gold medals in the 1,500m. She has also broken the world record three
times: first at the Florence Diamond League on June 2, 2023, clocking 3:49.11;
then a year later at the Paris Diamond League with 3:49.04; and most recently
at this year’s Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, lowering the mark to 3:48.68.
Kipyegon
credited hard work and discipline for her unprecedented achievements.
“Every year
things are different, so you have to keep working hard, maintain discipline,
and stay humble,” she said.
The champion
also tipped Chepchirchir and Ewoi to carry Kenya’s dominance into the future,
noting they are ready to take up the mantle when she eventually moves to longer
distances.
“I am very happy
to see them perform well. I’m sure Kenya will continue dominating the 1,500m
even if I shift to longer races,” Kipyegon added.
