Family seeks justice for son, 24, shot in the belly by cop for breaking curfew

A 24-year-old man from Ititu village in Maragua is lucky to be alive, having survived a gun attack from a police officers enforcing curfew in the region.

Kelvin Mungai who is receiving medical care at the Maragua Hospital reportedly bumped into police officers on his way home after paying a visit to a family that had lost a son.

He told Citizen Digital, he was headed home in the company of two other friends.

They were on a motorbike.

According to Mungai, they bumped into several cops who ordered them to stop and alight from the bike.

One of the police officers reportedly demanded a Ksh.5,000 bribe in order to allow them to proceed home.

He claimed that after he was unable to produce the bribe that the officer unloaded on him, shot him in the belly and left him for the dead.

Anthony Maina, a doctor at Maragua Hospital said they had already done a surgical procedure, but the bullet was too deep in the chest cavity and requires specialized treatment.

Mungai’s family led by his mother now want the police officer prosecuted to bring justice to their kin.

Police officers based in Murang’a town have begun probe into the matter.
