A 48-year-old man has been killed by a hippopotamus while another one sustained serious injuries near Lwanda beach in Suba North constituency, Homa Bay county on Wednesday morning.

The fisherman identified as Janes Okombo died on the spot during the 5 am incident while he was fishing in Lake Victoria.

It is reported that Okombo left home with his colleague identified as Gilbert Abich, however, on their way to a fishing destination, they met a hippopotamus which attacked them.

The hippo hit their boat, and after it capsized, it got hold of them and bit Gilbert before killing Okombo.

Homa Bay County Beach Management Network Chairman Edward Oremo says the fishermen became helpless after the hippo broke their boat.

A team comprising Kenya Wild Life Service (KWS), Kenya Coast Guard Service officials, fishermen and residents have camped at the lake shore to begin retrieving Okombo’s body.

Meanwhile, Gilbert was rushed to Mbita Sub-county hospital before being referred to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital for medication.
