Speaking during the launch, Uasin Gishu governor Jonathan Bii noted that the event will enable young upcoming athletes to showcase their talent without travelling far away.
“It’s possible for young people to nature their talents in this event and even become elites in the future,” said Bii.
Bii stated that the ECM is geared towards enhancing environmental conservation as a way of mitigating the effects of climate change.
“Now that we are running for climate change, we want to ensure Eldoret has a clean environment especially due to emissions that has become a problem,” added Bii.
Eldoret City Marathon race director Moses Tanui said the race will be one of the biggest marathons in the world due to the higher number of athletes seeking to participate in it.
Tanui said the prize money will remain unchanged whereby the winners will carry KSh. 3.5 million.
“Our athletes cannot travel due to lack of finances, but early morning they can come here in Eldoret after boarding a Matatu and earn such a large amount because we pay KSh. 3.5 million to the first male and female athletes,” said Tanui
He said ECM has produced elite athletes that have succeeded in major races across the world and invested in Eldoret City.
