Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has given President William Ruto a seven-day ultimatum to reduce fuel prices, warning of nationwide protests if the demand is not met.
Speaking at a political rally in Dagoretti on Saturday, Gachagua accused
the President of reneging on campaign promises and burdening Kenyans with high
fuel costs.
“He lied that he would put money in people’s pockets,
instead, he took the little that was there. He increased the price of petrol. We
are giving you seven days to remove that thirty shillings on fuel; if you
don’t, we will shut down this country,” he said.
He further claimed that the government’s health system was
failing, forcing leaders to organise frequent fundraisers.
“A person who says motorcycles use kerosene is not normal.
If you want to help patients, go to Kenyatta National Hospital...they have no
food and no medicine,” he said.
“We have harambees every weekend because SHA is not working.
We respect Ruto, but we are not afraid of him. We want him to go back to
Sugoi,” Gachagua added.
The former Deputy President also announced a political
campaign dubbed “Operation Fagia,” targeting allies of the President. Gachagua argued that in his 'wantam' quest, all Ruto allies must also be voted out.
“I have launched an operation called ‘Fagia.’ All those who
are with Ruto must be swept out. When we kill a snake, we break its eggs too,”
he said.
DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala echoed the sentiments, taking a
swipe at the President’s leadership.
“We will send him one shilling each until it reaches three million, then let him give us his child and tell us if that is enough,” Malala said.
