Gor Mahia tightened their grip at the top of the Kenyan Premier League table with a hard-fought 1-0 win over eternal rivals AFC Leopards in a tense Mashemeji Derby, settled by Alpha Onyango.

Gor Mahia dominated large spells of the opening half and created several clear chances but failed to convert them. Their wastefulness in front of goal kept Leopards in the contest, and the two sides went into the break level after a cagey yet competitive first half.

The breakthrough came in the second half when Onyango struck the decisive goal to hand K’Ogalo full bragging rights in one of the most anticipated fixtures in Kenyan football. The midfielder’s finish proved enough to separate the two rivals in a match played with intensity from start to finish.

The narrow victory is also significant in the title race, pushing Gor Mahia six points clear at the summit with 61 points. With only five matches remaining, the result places the record 21-time champions firmly in control as they chase another domestic crown.

Gor Mahia showed discipline, composure, and determination throughout the contest, especially after taking the lead, managing the pressure of the derby atmosphere and protecting their advantage until the final whistle. Their defence remained solid whenever AFC Leopards pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

For AFC Leopards, the defeat is a painful setback in a season where they had stayed close to the leaders for long stretches, hoping to end their 28-year league title drought.

Ingwe remain second on 55 points and now face an uphill task to reel in their old rivals before the campaign concludes.

The Mashemeji Derby once again lived up to its billing, with intensity on the pitch and pride at stake for both sets of supporters. Tackles flew in, and emotions ran high, though only one clear chance ultimately made the difference.

For now, Gor Mahia hold the points advantage, derby honours, and momentum after another memorable win over their fiercest rivals.
