Gor Mahia patron Owalo calls for increased support for sports development

Owalo said sports should be treated as a serious economic driver rather than just recreation, arguing that the industry holds significant financial value if properly structured and supported from the grassroots level.

“There is a lot of money in sports and talent… and so there is a need to invest more in them to curb youth unemployment,” he said.

He pointed to the success of former national team players Victor Wanyama and McDonald Mariga as clear examples of how sports can provide a sustainable career path.

He noted that their journeys demonstrate what is possible when talent is properly nurtured and exposed to professional environments.

Owalo also said he remains committed to supporting community-based clubs, including AFC Leopards, Shabana FC, and Gor Mahia, saying the goal is to help them rise to the competitive standards they deserve and strengthen their development structures.

He noted that his support has in the past included providing playing materials, such as kits and training equipment, to various teams, as part of efforts to improve conditions for athletes and boost performance at the club level.

Owalo further urged stakeholders across the sporting ecosystem to invest more in training facilities, coaching development, and structured youth programmes, saying these are critical pillars for long-term growth.

He added that consistent investment in sports would not only improve performance on the field but also expand employment opportunities, especially for the youth, who continue to form the backbone of Kenya’s sporting talent pool.
