Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has assured secondary
school students and stakeholders of their safety during the Kenya Secondary
Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two ball games, which are set
to kick off on Tuesday in the county.
This assurance comes after three confirmed cases of MPOX
were recently reported in Lugari Constituency, sparking health concerns ahead
of the national event.
“As the county government, we want to assure all
participants and visitors that Kakamega is safe and ready to host the championship,”
said Governor Barasa.
The governor made the remarks while hosting Kakamega County
secondary school teams that qualified for the national stage.
Barasa noted that security has been enhanced across the
county to ensure the smooth running of the week-long championship.
“As co-chair of the County Security Council, I want to
assure our teams that security agencies are fully prepared to guarantee the
safety of all participants. We will also have ambulances on standby throughout
the week,” he added.
He further revealed that sporting fields and other
facilities have been adequately prepared for both the national games and the
upcoming East Africa secondary school championships.
“The renovations at Bukhungu Stadium are progressing well.
The artificial turf has already arrived and will be installed by the end of the
week,” he confirmed.
KSSSA National Chairman Kipchumba Maiyo also confirmed that
the opening ceremony will take place Tuesday morning at the Mumias Sports
Complex. The event will be followed by the boys’ football Group A opener
between Western Region champions Musingu High School and Wajir High School from
the North Eastern region.
“All teams, including junior and senior schools, are
expected at the Mumias Sports Complex for the opening ceremony. Thereafter,
Musingu, as hosts, will face Wajir at 11 a.m.,” Maiyo said.
The finals of the national championship are scheduled for
Saturday.
