The deceased, Raymond Omondi, was reportedly bathing with friends at the lake shore around 3pm when the attack occurred.
According to George Odhiambo Ondiek, the assistant chief of Wagwe North Sub-location, Omondi was dragged into the water by the crocodile, despite frantic efforts by friends and local fishermen to save him.
Residents and fishermen launched a joint operation to recover Omondi’s body, which extended into the night and continued into Tuesday morning.
The body was eventually retrieved and transferred to a nearby mortuary.
“The lake is home to crocodiles, and residents are urged to exercise caution and avoid bathing in the area to prevent such tragedies,” Mr. Odhiambo said.
Crocodile attacks are not uncommon along Kenya’s Lake Victoria shoreline, where local communities often rely on the lake for fishing and recreation.
Authorities have in the past urged vigilance, especially during the hot season when many people frequent the water.
