Kakamega Homeboyz Friday stormed into a convincing 4-1 win against Bidco United at St. Sebastian Park in Murang’a as the Kenya Premier League (KPL) action returned following FKF Cup break.
The win saw Homeboyz reignite a late title charge as they moved up to third on 31 points, nine points adrift of the leaders Gor Mahia after 19 rounds.
On the flipside, Bidco United’s stumble has become a full blown crisis as they went for a fifth consecutive match without a victory, leaving them entrenched in the relegation dogfight in 16th, two points above the basement side Sofapaka.
The opening fixture of the weekend began with a tense initial ten minutes as both teams were cautious as to avoid conceding first.
Oilers shot stopper, Issa Emuri, remained untested in the opening stages as he looked for his eighth clean sheet of the campaign, which would have had him ranked at joint third with some of the league’s elite keepers.
However, Rogers Ouma rose highest in the 15th minute to convert a John Omondi cross nodding Homeboyz ahead and effectively ending Emuri's hunt for an eigth cleansheet.
The visitors would double their lead twenty minutes after the opener with Henry Omollo slotting past a helpless Issa Emuri to add a much needed cushion heading into the break.
Heading into the second period Bidco Coach Anthony Akhulia introduced a host of four substitutions as he looked to turn around the 2 goal deficit and lift his side four points from the drop zone.
Any hopes for a comeback however would be put to bed in the 70th minute as Glen Masava's rocket would fly into the top corner off the upright to all but secure three crucial points for Kakamega Homeboyz.
Five minutes after that strike the Oilers would pull one back through center back Marvin Amuka following an expertly swung in corner for the hosts as they looked to spark an unlikely comeback in the final ten minutes.
Those hopes would again be put to rest as Kakamega Homeboyz would restore their three goal lead through Zinedine Wesonga. Played through neatly by Erick Okutu he slotted past Emuri to restore their three goal cushion in the first minute of stoppage time.
