The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists
Union (KMPDU) says it is closing in on a binding agreement with the Marsabit
County government after high-level talks aimed at resolving the standoff over
the welfare of county doctors.
In a statement on Tuesday, KMPDU
Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah said the union held constructive
discussions with Governor Mohamud Mohamed Ali and senior county officials, with
both sides expressing the urgency of ending the two-week-long strike.
“We highlighted several issues of
concern and extensively discussed the best modalities for addressing them
within the shortest timeframe possible,” Dr. Atellah said, noting that the
parties are now “tying up the loose notes in preparation for a binding
agreement.”
The negotiations were led by
KMPDU National Chairman Dr. Abi Mwachi and National Treasurer Dr. Mercy
Nabwire.
Dr. Atellah emphasized that the
union expects full implementation of whatever is agreed upon, saying KMPDU has
consistently ensured that signed commitments do not remain idle.
“It is our culture to follow through on all that we sign in
agreements. They are not just objects on paper but must be actualized and
fulfilled. This one shall not be an exception,” he said.
The union also thanked its
members in Marsabit for standing firm during the industrial action, saying:
“Our members have shown steadfast support for the union’s clarion call.”
If finalized, the agreement is expected to pave the way for
doctors in Marsabit, who have been on strike for the last two weeks, to return
to work, easing pressure on health services across the region.
