Dan Chege is among several Kenyans believed to have been duped into signing up to the Russian military to fight in Ukraine.

According to him, he was recruited for a driver's job in Russia, but upon landing, he was forced to sign documents written in Russian, a language he did not understand.

Little did he know that he signed up to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war.

"We were taken into a camp and ordered to wear military fatigues. When I tried to explain that I was in Russia as a driver, I was told that it is not what I signed for," Chege narrated to Citizen Digital.

In the military camp, Chege said they underwent training on how to handle firearms and were sent to the battlefield to face the Ukrainian forces.

Chege narrates a chilling experience on the frontline, where he claims 10 of the 11 Kenyan recruits were killed. He says he is the only one who survived.

"I kept asking to be let go, but they refused. At some point, I survived a magnetic landmine, which killed some of my colleagues and injured my feet," he adds.

All along, Chege kept sending videos and images to his wife back in Kenya. He told her that they should not count on him because, at some point, he was going to die.

Exhausted and depressed, he started plotting how he would escape from the battlefield, and indeed from Russia, back home.

"I pretended to be mentally unstable and started shooting aimlessly in the air. My colleagues told my commander that I was behaving abnormally," Chege says.

He was taken off the field and into a mental hospital, where he was put on medication.

Fearing that he would be sent back to Ukraine, Chege requested that one of the doctors drop him off at the Kenyan embassy in Moscow so he could pick up a parcel.

At the embassy, he met a Kenyan lady working there, whom he credits for his escape.

"The lady treated me so well. She gave me food and a place to rest, and arranged for my transfer back home. My mum sold her only cow and sent an air ticket. At the airport, the Kenyan lady helped me pass through," Chege further claims.

He says his escape from the battlefront is a miracle he never saw coming, and claims more Kenyans have been recruited to fight in Ukraine for Russia.
