In a candid and emotional reflection, Gachagua recounted the once-close friendship he shared with Uhuru and admitted that the wedge driven between them by President William Ruto was a profound mistake.
"Uhuru is my friend and brother. We achieved what we desired for him to be president. Between 2013 and 2017, we had the best relationship," Gachagua stated on Obinna Show.
"Until Ruto came between us. He (Uhuru) was very nice to me. We had an extremely good relationship. And I really regret that I allowed Ruto to get between me and Uhuru."
Gachagua revealed that it was Uhuru himself who introduced him to Ruto and that he initially supported Ruto's presidential ambitions out of a sense of fairness when Uhuru appeared unwilling to endorse his then-deputy.
"I believed it was unfair that Uhuru didn't want Ruto to be president. Today I know differently. Uhuru was right. I had poor judgement."
In a rare show of humility, the former deputy president praised Uhuru’s leadership and expressed admiration for his wisdom and continued presence on the national stage.
"I cherish his leadership. I have tremendous respect for him as an elder and senior citizen. I wish him a peaceful and enjoyable retirement. When he is attacked unnecessarily, I defend and protect him," he said.
Gachagua acknowledged the pain caused by their political fallout, revealing that Uhuru felt deeply betrayed when the two fell out after the 2022 general election period.
"He took it heavy when we 'betrayed' him. He felt I needed to believe him — that Ruto is a bad man. Had I listened to him, this country would not be in the hole we are in," said Gachagua.
As the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election begins to shift, Gachagua said his focus was on "undoing" his past "mistakes."
"That’s water under the bridge. My focus is to correct the situation and the mistakes I made. I'm an extremely busy man trying to undo those mistakes," he concluded.
