The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the death of a robbery with violence suspect who allegedly died by suicide while in custody at the Kisumu Central Police Station last week.

According to IPOA Nyanza Regional Coordinator, Paul Murkomen, officers from the authority have already recorded statements from the police personnel who were on duty at the time of the incident.

He added that IPOA is in the process of tracing the family of the deceased, identified as Kelvin Oduor, also known by his alias Kevo.

Murkomen stated that the investigation aims to determine whether Oduor’s death was self-inflicted or if foul play was involved.

He confirmed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

The deceased had been arrested on Monday, October 27, in connection with a robbery with violence case and was remanded for 14 days pending his next court appearance.

However, on Friday, October 31, Oduor was reportedly found hanging in the bathroom of the police cells, with officers at the station claiming that he had taken his own life.
