Kibiwott Kandie and Naomi Jebet are the 2023 Kirdam Half Marathon champions after conquering the hilly terrain of Kabarnet in Baringo County on Saturday.

The third edition of the annual race attracted top local runners as well as international athletes with competitors enduring hot conditions on the day.

Kandie, a former half marathon world record holder, made a decisive move in the 16-kilometer mark and went on to claim the honours in the men's race in 1:02.31.

"I was very determined for this race, having pulled out from the Kenya's 10,000m team to Budapest due to hamstring injury. I'm now okay I've recovered from the injury, " said Kandie.

In women's race, Jebet surged to victory in 1:12.36 narrowly defeating a determined Vivian Jerotich who finished at 1:12.58.

"I'm surprised by this victory. I'll take time to absorb this before deciding my next move, " remarked an elated Jebet.

The winners won Sh250,000 each in prize money.

Meanwhile, Vincent Kigen and Loice Chemining pocketed 100,000 Kenyan shillings after they emerged victorious at the 10km in the men's and women's category respectively.

Kirdam Half Marathon organizers intend to use the proceeds to support environmental conservation initiatives in the local community and the wider Baringo County.

Leaders present at the event included the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and Small Enterprises Hon. Simon Chelugui, Baringo county Governor Benjamin Cheboi among other leaders who in unison called for the need to enhance an awareness about the climate change menace.
