Residents of Karatina in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County, have welcomed the completion of the Karatina Marigiti ESP Market, citing improved trading conditions for local farmers and traders.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, chairman Nelson Githinji said the modern market will offer a more organised and sheltered space for business, protecting traders from harsh weather conditions and improving overall working conditions. He noted that the facility represents a step forward in efforts to modernise open-air trading.
The market can accommodate more than 300 traders and includes a social hall, ICT centre, children’s play area and designated spaces for breastfeeding mothers. It is also equipped with storage and preservation facilities intended to support longer trading hours, particularly for fresh produce.
President William Ruto, who officially marked the completion of the project, said the facility will serve traders and farmers from Karatina and neighbouring Kirinyaga and Murang’a counties.
“This market will be a major asset to the region and support trade beyond Mathira,” the President said.
During the same visit, President Ruto also laid the foundation stone for the Karatina Affordable Housing Project, which will comprise five residential blocks with a total of 680 housing units of varying sizes, including one-room, studio, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units, as well as market-rate housing.
Planned amenities for the housing project include parking areas, landscaped green spaces, paved walkways, waste treatment facilities, water storage infrastructure and perimeter security.
According to project officials, construction has so far created more than 700 jobs, with local artisans and Jua Kali associations expected to supply items such as doors and windows.
The Affordable Housing Programme is part of the government’s broader efforts to address housing shortages while supporting employment and local industries.
