Kenya Power to phase out petrol and diesel-powered vehicles

In a move to support use of clean energy and battle global warming, Kenya Power is set to do away with its fleet of petrol and diesel-powered automobiles and replace them with electric ones.

Acting CEO, Geoffrey Muli said that in the mid-term stop gap measures, the company has set aside KSh.40 million this financial year to purchase electric vehicles that include two pick-ups and a four-wheel drive for the pilot phase as well as setting up electric vehicle charging stations in Nairobi for the company use.

"We have set aside a budget of KSh. 40 million for out pilot phase. We also intend to purchase long range electric bikes as part of our plan to phase out petrol powered motorbikes within our fleet," noted Muli.

"Kenya Power intends to substantially reduce its carbon footprint by purchasing more e-vehicles in the near future. We must play our rightful role in combating global warming by championing mitigation measures such as adoption of electric motorization,” Muli added.
