This assurance was delivered by the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, during the unveiling of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Strategic Plan in Nairobi.
Dr. Oluga affirmed that the administration of President Dr. William Samoei Ruto has prioritised the welfare, growth, and equitable deployment of health workers as part of wide-ranging health sector reforms. He noted that the commitment is reflected in key efforts already underway, signalling a shift toward a more coordinated and sustainable approach to health workforce management.
Among the milestones cited were the operationalisation of the Health Human Resource Advisory Council and the formation of a national taskforce dedicated to improving health worker welfare. The PS further noted progress in clinical placement programmes, UHC staffing structures, and the rollout of internship opportunities aimed at ensuring that trained practitioners transition smoothly into service.
“These developments are clear indicators of direction and intent from the highest office. The Government stands ready to collaborate closely with KMPDU to actualise this new plan,” Dr. Oluga stated, underscoring the importance of partnership between the union and state agencies in executing healthcare reforms.
The newly launched KMPDU Strategic Plan is expected to provide a structured framework to strengthen capacity, enhance professional development, and address long-standing gaps within the medical workforce. It signals renewed momentum toward improving healthcare delivery across the country, with human resources for health positioned as a cornerstone in achieving quality and accessible services for all Kenyans.
