Kenya women’s rugby on the rise despite Africa Sevens heartbreak

The loss marked Kenya’s seventh runner-up finish since their maiden title in 2018, showing the team’s consistency at the continental level and the persistent challenge of breaking through against dominant sides like the Springboks.
Yet behind the scoreline lies a story of progress.
Corporate support, particularly from Safaricom via its M-PESA brand, has brought structure and stability to women’s rugby.
The KSh100 million sponsorship announced in late 2024 has funded player allowances, medical coverage, and mentorship programs, offering athletes a level of security and support that was previously lacking.
Beyond rugby, the initiative promotes financial literacy, wellness, and professional growth, helping the players prepare for life on and off the field.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer Esther Waitito said, “Our support for women in rugby is not about a single tournament. It’s about creating long-term opportunities so these athletes can thrive in a sport that has historically been male-dominated.
"We want to ensure they have the mentorship, infrastructure, and resources to grow both on and off the field.”she offered.
"We are also looking to work closely with the Kenya Rugby Union over the long term to strengthen the sport at all levels.” she concluded.
As Kenya reflects on the Africa Sevens, the focus is shifting from immediate results to the broader trajectory. With consistent backing, growing experience, and improved infrastructure, the Lionesses are better positioned than ever to challenge for continental supremacy, and to inspire a new generation of female athletes across the country.
The timing could not be better for the Lionesses, as Nairobi has been selected to host the Division Two tournament of the HSBC Sevens Series in February 2026.
The upcoming event offers a chance to rally local support, showcase Kenya’s growing rugby talent, and build momentum for the national women’s team ahead of future continental challenges.
