Kenya Power has welcomed the energisation of the Sondu–Ndhiwa–Homa Bay–Awendo 132kV transmission line by the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), saying the project will significantly improve electricity reliability in South Nyanza and parts of the South Rift.
The transmission
line was switched on Wednesday at 4:07pm, creating a stronger power supply
route into the region, easing pressure on constrained sections of the grid and
improving overall network stability.
According to Kenya
Power, the energisation followed successful construction works and
commissioning tests conducted jointly with KETRACO to ensure safe integration
into the national grid.
Following the
switch-on, Ndhiwa began receiving power directly from the Sondu generation
plant, reducing strain on the previously overloaded Muhoroni–Chemosit
transmission section and stabilising supply across the wider region.
Kenya Power noted
that, for the first time in recent periods, the region experienced peak hours
without load management.
Previously, some
customers in South Nyanza and South Rift were subjected to rotational power
cuts due to transmission constraints.
Kenya Power
Managing Director and CEO Dr (Eng) Joseph Siror described the project as a
major reinforcement of the grid in the region.
“This is a
significant reinforcement of the Nyanza and Western grid. It strengthens the
supply path into the region, relieves pressure on overloaded sections of the
network, and improves reliability, voltage stability, and customer experience,”
he said.
The utility
company reaffirmed its commitment to working with sector agencies, including
KETRACO, to strengthen the national grid and ensure reliable, affordable and
sustainable electricity supply.
