DP Kithure Kindiki has defended the government’s development record and announced a raft of projects in Kilifi County, saying the Kenya Kwanza administration is rolling out affordable housing, roads, electrification and markets across the country without discrimination.

Speaking during a public sensitisation event at Kakanjuni Trading Centre in Ganze, Kindiki said the government was inspecting ongoing projects in Kilifi North, including an affordable housing programme in Kenzo where 1,000 homes are being built under a project he said has been allocated Ksh1 billion.

He said the government has paid contractors Ksh177 billion, allowing them to return to sites to build 6,000 kilometres of roads nationwide. In Kilifi County, he said 385 kilometres of tarmac roads are under construction, with 56 kilometres currently being tarmacked after contractors were paid Ksh2 billion.

Kindiki also announced power connection projects, saying 155 families in Mpirani will be connected to electricity, while Ksh2.1 billion has been allocated to connect villages across Kilifi County, targeting an additional 23,589 families. In Ganze Constituency, he said Ksh382 million has been set aside for rural electrification to connect 4,000 homes.

On markets, the Deputy President said modern markets are being constructed in Kilifi County, citing projects in Mtwapa, Watamu and Mnarani, and said construction of the Ganze Market would begin after Ramadan. He said Ksh57 million has been allocated for the Mkuruni ESP Market.

Kindiki said development is being implemented equally across regions, arguing that projects in Nyanza, Western, Central and Rift Valley are on the same footing as those in the Coast, North Eastern and Nairobi.

He also took aim at leaders criticising the administration, saying they had an opportunity to develop the country but failed and should not mislead the public.

Politically, Kindiki said President William Ruto has helped unite the country under a broad-based government, and urged ODM to continue strengthening its party alongside UDA, describing the relationship as “two parties in one government.” He said any competition between ODM and UDA would be friendly and that the partners would continue working together.
